Thursday, July 17th: Montevideo, MN or … How strong is the lonesome cyclist?

Around 4 am I hear my woman scream:”Mama, Mama!” … and then it’s quiet again. In the morning she tells me about the “Bad man with long blond hair who crawled into her bed with her”… “Don’t worry, woman, I’ll protect you from that evil man.” It’s a very wet Green Turtle we have to put in the backpack. My woman is the last one on the grassy field before the school. Inside the other persons are just waiting for breakfast. Yessss… bagels! And eggs and sausage and bacon (of course). Before leaving, my woman makes some phone calls to Belgium. Today is a longer day again: 85 miles almost straight East. I think we are still in Belgium: farmland with crops: corn, wheat and soy beans.

There isn’t much elevation change. The first part of the ride is like 2 days ago: a highway with rumble strips at the edge, forcing us to almost cycle on the road and … trucks and cars coming from both directions.

A local dog sees me and chases me for a moment, but with one bark from me he returns to his home. Hope you won’t get hit by a car! A left turn brings us on  SD 15 – which at first seems a quiet small road, but some trucks change my mind. But the view at the high point is rewarding.

Once on SD 20 it feels as if we are the only 2 around here. It’s fun to be out there by ourselves – with almost no cars. This route takes us into Minnesota.

Just a couple miles further, in the small town of Marietta, is the picnic. I do not need anything, but my woman, she just eats 4 servings of the fruit salad. Rob is doing dishes today!

Now we can cycle further: the afternoon clouds are getting bigger and darker. We were lucky in Madison: a golf ball just missed our heads! Hey woman, look at that: what a big fish!

Just out of town, we halt for the road work. Hey, pilot car, your driving way too fast for us… Now we have to find our own best route through the road work. The next 15 miles are lonesome ones through farm country. “Listen… Don’t you hear it…”. It’s Lac Qui Parle! What a funny name – I wonder what it meant, what story is behind the name? My woman takes a break at the waterstop: the rest of the bagel, some gummy bears and this should be enough to reach destination.

First we go through Watson, the Goose Capital of the USA – but I see no goose to chase!

Funny names here! Montevideo is that typical USA town: the old center is almost deserted, while 10 streets further a new strip with all the commercial buildings is growing. It was a strange day: my boss cannot decide if she liked the ride or not. But, the miles are in the legs…
