It
happened again last night! As most of the cyclists are just about to fall
asleep in their tents a siren goes off. And then again, and once more… Now my
woman is worried! She unzips the Green Turtle and finds only Kerri (again)
doing the same. “Is this the real deal?” they ask each other. And again – not
one other tent opens up! Kerri phones home to ask if there is a tornado watch
for our area, but no… In the morning the other humans talk either about the
trains passing along in the night or about finding flags on their bicycle, but
no one cares about the siren. The morning seems to be a bit darker than usual –
especially along the marshes, where at some spots small clouds of small bugs
hang in the air.
Woman, can you go ride somewhere else – these bugs are annoying me! At 7 miles we cross the town of Nelson.
Way in the distance I
notice 2 large chimneys: Alma – another town, where my woman halts at the Kwik
Trip.
The Shuli-woman is just leaving the gas station. Am I glad I’m wearing a
fur coat: it’s freezing in here! A train passes us and the conductor blows his
whistle at us! Yeaha!
Roads in Wisconsin have letters of the alphabet and the
less important a road becomes the more letters it get. Today we’ll be on roads
like OO, or TT, or DE…This smaller road brings us along the river.
A town named
Buffalo City has some very nice houses with river view. Somehow my boss thinks
she feels as if she’s cycling in Florida or maybe around New Orleans with
swamps. She expects a crocodile will show up!
Instead, suddenly a giant Viking
blocks the way!
Some people do put all kinds of stuff in their garden. Look at
all those animals at that house on County road OO! Only in America!
Too bad the
county roads end and we have to cycle again on the main road. Just before
Fountain City a fallen rock sits in a house. You can visit it! At the Kwik Trip
of Fountain City we meet up again with the Shuli-woman. I wonder if the humans
are sponsored by the Kwik Trip! My woman tells her about a shop just up the
hill and of course, they both head that way. My goodness… t’s a CAT-shop! No,
leave me out of it woman! I’ll stay with Sweet Machine. I believe the
Shuli-woman is even worse about cats than my boss is! Wroof… I’m getting hungry…
will you please speed up to the picnic station? This one stands just along the
road on top of a hill and a shooting drive next to it. The next 13 miles on the
main highway are no fun: lots of traffic and almost no shoulder. My woman is
about to quit, when we finally can take a left turn on a smaller country road.
The next 30 miles are on winding smaller roads – also more challenging going up
and down. But it’s fun, my woman says, even when she has to walk the last
couple of meters of an uphill (wrong gears). The town of Mindoro is another
fuel stop: this is what my woman likes a lot about her travels – sitting on the
ground outside a small grocery shop or a gas station. Wadel Hill, Pettinger
Hill and another hill are all conquered! It’s almost dinner time when my woman
shows up at the school in …. A ride in the van to the restaurant and good
company at the dinner table in an American style restaurant ends a perfect day!
